Belarus is one of the countries with a high level of Human Development Index. Belarus has always had a high adult literacy rate, which is about 99.7% today. 98% of the population have access to basic, general secondary and vocational education. In fact, in recent years, general secondary education has become compulsory in Belarus. The education system of the Republic of Belarus ensures educational training of students at basic, additional and special education levels.

Higher education in Belarus

The education system of the Republic of Belarus is developing in accordance with global trends, meeting the requirements of an innovation-driven economy. It is a major source for training of highly-qualified specialists.

There are 51 institutions of higher education in the Republic of Belarus, 42 of them are state and 9 are private. Higher education institutions in Belarus provide high-quality training of specialists of the Ist and IInd levels of higher education, training specialists of higher qualification (postgraduate, doctoral studies), carry out research, produce innovative high-tech products.

After the official joining of Belarus to the Bologna Process in May 2015, the range of educational opportunities for foreign citizens has increased. The students of Belarusian educational institutions have a great opportunity to study a wide range of specialties, as well as to be engaged in scientific research. Training of specialists with higher education in the Republic of Belarus is done across 15 educational profiles.


Educational Fields

The first cycle of higher education system (Bachelor’s degree) offers 382 specialties and the second one (Master’s degree) provides 331, respectively. The structure of specialties is constantly improving: there are new disciplines in the field of technologies, nuclear energy, robotechnics, space exploration, etc.

Legalization and recognition of educational certificates

Belarusian higher education institutions are involved in international projects, particularly, Tempus, Erasmus Mundus and Jean Monnet. Belarus participated in the Tempus project since 1994, with a total of 64 projects in 1994-2013 with Belarusian universities as participants. In 2010-2013, there has been an upward trend in projects with Belarusian participation selected: 2010 – 2 projects, 2011 – 3, 2012 – 8, 2013 – 13. In 2015, 4 projects with the participation of Belarus were selected for funding within the Erasmus+ programme aimed at capacity building in higher education (6 projects were selected in 2016, 3 in 2017, 4 in 2018, 4 in 2019 and 3 in 2020). Belarusian universities take an active part in the Erasmus + programme: 26 universities took part in CBHE projects in 2015-2019. The leading universities in Erasmus + projects are: Belarusian state universityYanka Kupala State University of Grodno, Polotsk State UniversityFrancisk Skorina Gomel State UniversityBrest State Technical University.

International Credit and Academic Mobility funded by Erasmus + programmes increases every year and attracted in 2019 more than 3 thousand students and teachers for incoming and outcoming activities.
