On 26-27 October 2015, the first Higher Education Reform Experts (HERE) seminar on the topic “ICT-based learning” took place in Petra, Jordan with the support of Al-Hussein bin Talal University. The two-day seminar, organised by the SPHERE team, focused on a diversity or concepts and approaches related to e-learning and how they can be a means to innovate learning and teaching. The first day of the seminar began with an overview of current trends and challenges in e-learning in Southern Mediterranean countries and in Europe, followed by presentations and discussion on different institutional approaches to e-learning. This included various methods, ranging from blended learning to MOOCs and entirely virtual universities and also addressed issues such as online assessment. On the following day, participants learned how ICT can be embedded in and help to shape institutional practices and support their activities in internationalisation, staff development and quality assurance. Participants exchanged also views on how e-learning could respond to the needs of conflict regions and especially displaced students. Around 90 participants from 23 EU Partner Countries attended the event.
